Radiation Therapy
Radiation
therapy is defined as the use of hight energy X-rays
or particles to treat disease. The goal of radiation
therapy is to kill the cancer cells while sparing the
normal surrounding tissue. Radiation therapy may be
used alone or combined with other treatments such as
chemotherapy and/or surgery. The MMC Radiation Therapy
Department consists of three separate Treatment Centers:
Coastal Cancer Treatment Center in Bath, Maine, the
Scarborough Radiation Therapy Center in Scarborough,
Maine and the Southern Maine Radiation Therapy
Center at the main hospital campus in Portland, Maine.
This multi-center approach allows patients to remain
closer to home while undergoing their course of radiation
treatment. |
