Stephens Memorial Hospital Mammography Department
Receives ACR Accreditation

NORWAY, ME -  The Mammography department at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway has been awarded a three-year term of re-accreditation by the America College of Radiology (ACR) as a result of a recent survey.  The Mammography department was originally accredited by the ACR in 1994.

The ACR, headquartered in Reston, VA, awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice.  Evaluations are conducted by the board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.  They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of the facility equipment.  The surveyors report their findings to the ACR's Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.

The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic-interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists and nuclear medicine and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services.

Stephens Memorial Hospital Mammography Department also recently received a Mammography Regulation and Reimbursement Report (MRRR) award for Breast Imaging Innovation.  The Women's Imaging Department includes Mammography, Ultrasound, and Bone Density and was revamped 2 years ago and now performs close to 5,000 exams a year.  The MRRR award was presented to the hospital for its community outreach to women, by providing no cost mammogram screenings through a coupon system.  SMH provides up to 300 screenings a year to women who have no insurance or who are underinsured in an effort to make certain women getting their annual mammograms.
