Mission Statement Healthy Oxford Hills will promote partnerships, policies and programs to protect and enhance the health of residents of Oxford Hills.
Vision Statement Oxford Hills residents will be the healthiest people in Maine.
The Healthy Oxford Hills coalition was assembled in the fall of 2000 as a means to action for individuals and organizations concerned about the health of residents of the Oxford Hills community. A five-year grant from the Maine Bureau of Health has allowed the coalition to address significant health threats to the Oxford Hills community including:
Heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases
Together these diseases are responsible for approximately three-quarters of all of the deaths in this region. They have a major impact on our economy as a result of direct expenses for medical treatment and lost productivity for area businesses. At least forty percent of the deaths they cause can be attributed to a group of three related factors:
To combat these factors, Healthy Oxford Hills is working closely with other community partners to promote local programs that:
Encourage more active lifestyles and healthier eating
Help smokers quit and keep kids from starting to smoke
Protect children and adults from the dangers of secondhand smoke
These programs include walking programs, anti-tobacco youth groups, and guest speakers and resources for teachers and students in local schools. The focus of the coalition is to create policies and environments that support a healthier lifestyle.
