Western Maine Health Purchases Libra Foundation Property in Norway
Norway, ME - Western Maine Healthcare Corporation, the parent organization of Stephens Memorial Hospital has purchased the former Cummings Mill property in Norway from the Libra Foundation.
The purchase was made after it was learned that Libra had concluded that the economic environment would not support the type of project previously envisioned.
WMH currently has no specific development plans for the property. However, the acquisition is viewed as a possible means to address the shortage of office space and parking accommodations on the main campus of the hospital.
According to Tim Churchill, WMH President and CEO, the purchase reflects the system's commitment to the ongoing revitalization of downtown Norway. "Our Board of Trustees believes that it is important to support development efforts and to do so in a manner consistent with preserving the character of the town."
Part of the agreement with Libra calls for WMH to plant grass seed and create a park on the property for use by residents until such time as it is determined how it will be used by the health system. WMH will maintain the property during this period and pay property taxes to the town of Norway.
