SMH Receives $50,000 to Fight Obesity

Stephens Memorial Hospital, a member of MaineHealth, recently accepted a $50,000 grant for the implementation of 5-2-1-0 Let’s Go Oxford County!

Let’s Go! is a nationally recognized childhood obesity prevention program. The goal of Let’s Go! is to increase physical activity and healthy eating for children from birth to 18 through policy and environmental change.  The message is simple, every day: eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, 2 hours or less of recreational screen time (none for kids 2 and under), get at least 1 hour of physical activity, and 0 sugary drinks.  Let’s Go! works in six sectors to reach families where they live, study, work and play to reinforce the importance of healthy eating and physical activity. A program of The Kids CO-OP at The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center, Let’s Go! is implemented in partnership with MaineHealth. In addition, Let’s Go! and the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, DHHS, have engaged in a public-private partnership to improve the health of youth and families through the work of the Healthy Maine Partnerships.

Obesity is one of six key priorities tracked through the MaineHealth Health Index Program, which measures progress in improving the health status of the people who reside in the MaineHealth service area. As a Community Health Improvement program within MaineHealth, Let’s Go! serves as a critical clinical and community strategy to address this important issue.

Stephens Memorial Hospital is proud to be a part of the movement for a healthier Maine, and by bringing Let’s Go! to their communities, Stephens Memorial Hospital is already off to a running start. Their partnership will include county school districts, childcare centers and Head Start programs, afterschool and summer programs, worksite wellness programs, healthcare practices and community groups.  The effort will include supporting Martha O’Leary, SAD17’s Food Service Director, and Jeanne LaPointe, Food Service Director for SAD44 and RSU10, in meeting the goals of the USDA’s HealthierUS School’s Challenge. This challenge has strict guidelines for school nutrition and physical activity.  Stephens Memorial Hospital will also partner with Healthy Oxford Hills in their efforts to help the residents of Oxford County live healthier lives.

As a member of MaineHealth, Stephens Memorial Hospital is part of a not-for-profit family of leading high-quality providers and other healthcare organizations working together so their communities are the healthiest in America.
